Episode 141: Into The Forest I Go

Star Trek Discovery comes to its mid season finale with Into the Forest I Go. The first chapter of season one comes to a close, luckily the wait won’t be too long for the second chapter of season one! Aaron and David first talk a bit of news and non spoiler reactions to the episode before the episode synopsis and the spoiler filled episode discussion.

Everything about the episode is fantastic, the writing, the acting, the terrific fight scene it all comes together for an absolutely fantastic mid season finale! We hope you brought lots to drink and a bag full of bread crumbs because it’s time to go into the forest for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Synthaholics Episode 140: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

Aaron and David are back to discus “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” or if you want peace prepare for war. This week we get our first planetary away mission since the opening of “The Vulcan Hello”, more Klingons, and Admiral Cornwell! Saru is leading the landing party and much of the episode is a character study on our Kelpien officer as we start to learn much more about him. We only have one more episode until the midseason finale and this Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum feels like the first part of a two or three part episode. Grab a drink it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Synthaholics Episode 139: Star Trek Discovery Magic to Make the Sanest Man go Mad

Mudd is back in episode seven of Star Trek Discovery “Magic to Make the Sanest Man go Mad”! Previously in  “Choose your Pain” Mudd promised Lorca that he would have his revenge, and his revenge is had many times over. Aaron and David talk this week about how layered this episode is. This episode has some basic story and visual cues back to the Star Trek the Next Generation episode “Cause and Effect” but there is so much more to this story then just the time loop. There is the why, the how along with some story threads that we didn’t really see coming. It’s time to practice your beer pong and find your space glowing green solo cups it’s time for you weekly Star Trek keg party!

Episode 138: Star Trek Discovery Lethe

Episode 138: Star Trek Discovery Lethe

Synthaholics Episode 138: Star Trek Discovery Lethe

Aaron and David are back to discuss Star Trek Discovery Episode 6 “Lethe”. This week was heavy on character building and it was a nice change of pace compared to the last several episodes. Lethe was such a fascinating ride where we learn more about Michael, Lorca, Ash, and Sarek. Lethe didn’t seem to do a whole lot of advancing the overall story this week but it was for sure setting up the chess board. We can’t wait to see what all this leads to in the upcoming episodes! So far the end of each episode this season always leaves us wanting more, this episode is no exception. With only have three more episodes before the show goes on break we wonder how they will keep upping the ante. We hope you enjoy your weekly shot of Star Trek.

Episode 130: Kipleigh Brown and James Kerwin return!

Episode 130: Kipleigh Brown and James Kerwin return!

This week on Synthaholics guests Kipleigh Brown and James Kerwin return to talk Star Trek Continues. James Kerin directed and wrote the teleplay for the recent Star Trek Continues episode “Embracing the Winds”. Kipleigh Brown plays Smith on Star Trek Continues and she wrote the teleplay for the most recent episode “What Ships Are For”. We found out the cast and crew recently had screenings of “What Ships Are For” at ILM and and Pixar so we got to hear about that. Writing becomes a major topic of the episode and this gets us sidetracked into discussing recent science fiction film! It was an absolute pleasure having Kipleigh and James join us this week, so we hope you enjoy this extra special shot of Star Trek!

Episode 129: Message in a Bottle

Synthaholics Episode 129: Message in a Bottle

Synthaholics Episode 129: Message in a Bottle

Have you ever sent a Message in a Bottle? Well it doesn’t really seem Voyager really did on this episode with the same name. It seemed like it was maybe more like message in a doctor? That’s not the only part of the episode that doesn’t make sense.

But before we try to crawl backwards into the bottle, for news we talk a little about the Orville because I don’t think it is something we have really touched on. Black Mirror’s new season is mentioned because they have one episode for the upcoming season that is visually similar to Star Trek.

Star Trek Voyager’s Message in a Bottle guest stars Andy Dick as the EMH II. There is some great back and forth between Robert Picardo and Andy Dick that are some of the best parts of the episode. The B plot just feels kind of like a waste of time. Also why does sending a file cause the file to be lost? All this and more this week on Synthaholics your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Synthaholics Episode 128: Explorers with Andrew Dumais

Episode 128: Explorers with Andrew Dumais

Synthaholics Episode 128:  Explorers with Andrew Dumais

This week we talk the Deep Space Nine episode Explorers with Andrew Dumais. Andrew has been a past guest on the show. He was on our episode about The Doctors and our Religion and Star Trek episode. We hope you enjoyed the Ben and Jake Sisko bit Aaron and David did back on our episode about the Jem’Hadar because that bit is back in a big way!

Before we get into the episode we talk some Star Trek news mostly dealing with Star Trek Discovery’s Jason Isaacs. Over the past week or so he has made a wave in the Star Trek community with some of his fascinating comments.

This episode heavily features the father and son dynamic so after the main episode discussion Aaron poses the question to Andrew and David if they had any memorable times with their fathers. Once we answer we turn the question to Aaron and his is probably one of the more interesting stories that we get to hear. Where’s the rum you are gonna need it on this solar sail ship because it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 126: Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV

Episode 126: Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV

Episode 126: Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV

This week we talk Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV. STLV is the Star Trek Las Vegas convention it is the largest Star Trek Con in the United States. Since Joe was still at the convention when we recorded this week he tells us what he has been up to at the con.

The stories from the con are great and one of Joe’s favorite episodes is the Star Trek The Next Generation episode Cause and Effect. This is a very fun episode that uses time travel in a new way for its time. If you think this is a copy of Groundhog Day this episode actually came out first!

Once we break down the episode we get into a discussion about our experiences with Déjà vu. The talk of Déjà vu makes David think of his fascination with the mandela effect. We go over a few examples of this effect and what the theory of how so many people can have false memories. Grab your favorite drink and your cards it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Synthaholics Episode 125: The Killing Game with Adam Herr

Episode 125: The Killing Game with Adam Herr

Episode 125: The Killing Game with Adam Herr

This week Aaron and David discuss the Killing Game with Adam Herr. Adam Herr is a member of The Geekiverse and we’ve had different guests from the Geekivers in the past.

This week is an extra long episode clocking in at just over two hours because we have about 40 minutes of discussion of news and and rabbit holes. We finally get around to discussing the new SDCC Star Trek Discovery Trailer and get into some of the articles that have been released since SDCC.

Once we get past the news we talk about Adam’s favorite episode of Star Trek Voyager The Killing Game! This is a holodeck two parter episode where the Hirogen have taken over Voyager and forced Harry Kim to convert the ship into a giant holodeck. Meanwhile the Hirogen run programs where they can hunt the crew of Voyager over and over again. This is a fun episode as many of the hologram episodes tend to be. There are some strange leaps this episode makes and we have fun getting into all of them. Make whatever drink you are having a triple because this weekly shot of Star Trek is a long one!

Episode 124: Enterprise Twilight

Episode 124: Enterprise Twilight

Synthaholics Episode 124: Enterprise Twilight

Remember the Star Trek Enterprise Twilight where a space anomaly gave poor archer brain parasites that were out of phase with time?  This basically makes Archer like the guy in the movie Memento!

Without being able to form new memories Archer can no longer command the Enterprise and this leads to many disasters. But before we get into the episode we talk about some of the props, costumes and ships that were shown off at San Diego Comic Con. Alas we recorded the episode early so we didn’t get to talk about the new trailer this week.

Be sure to listen next week as we will be talking about that new trailer then! Would you give up being able to form new memories if you had T’Pol taking care of you the rest of your life? We ask and answer that question and more on your weekly shot of Star Trek!
