Welcome to the 300th episode of Synthholics. Aaron and David celebrate this milestone by talking about life, the universe, and everything. This week we look back over almost six years and 300 episodes of Synthaholics. As part of this discussion we explain our current feelings about Star Trek as it currently exists and mention some of our goals for the podcast once we come back from our break. Think of this time as the end of a season and we’ll be back for the next season. We have a listener email this week with some suggestions for the show when we come back. Please feel free to email us during the break and if we have enough emails we could devote an entire episode to reading emails from you the listeners. Episode 287: Star Trek Discovery “That Hope Is You, Part 1”

Aaron and David are back this week to discuss “That Hope is You, Part 1” the first episode of season 3 of Star Trek Discovery. This episode will contain spoilers. The episode is mostly carried by Sonequa Martin-Green who shows a huge range in her acting ability. While the story is mostly a fun chase sequence. We start off giving some non spoiler thoughts of the first episode before we get into deep spoilers. The 930 year jump Discovery has made the future opens up so many possibilities for where the season could go. It will be very interesting to see where it could go and we do some speculation on where the larger story could go and when we think we will see the rest of the crew. What do you think where this future story is heading? Could the temporal cold war still be causing issues? Only time will tell. Book Club Episode 10: Dune Part 10

This week Duncan Idaho is such a loud drunk that he wakes up Lady Jessica while she is sleeping from down the hall. Duncan has been enjoying the spice beer and hanging with the ladys a little too much. Lady Jessica then has an intense talk with Thufir and debates whether to not tell him she is pregnant with the Duke’s daughter. Duke Leto finds a corpse down the hall and then the almost corpse of the nearly deceased Shadout Mapes. He then discovers that his dentist Doctor Yueh seems to have been sabotaging the generator room. Doctor Yueh gives him some anti speed and replaces his tooth so that he can use it to assassinate Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Pour yourself a cold beverage and listen to more Expanse. Enjoy together responsibly!

He also enlists Gurney to recruit as much of the help as they can to assist in mining the spice to get production rolling again. Later Paul gets to attend his very first staff meeting on Dune where they all get the low down on profit margins and the status of the mining equipment. As our country struggles with the issues of race and equality we dive into a classic Deep Space Nine episode. In this story the Prophets transport Sisko to the 1950s. Sisko becomes Benny Russell, a science-fiction writer that struggles with civil rights and inequality. When Benny writes his best story of Captain Benjamin Sisko a black commander of a futuristic space station. Benny is met with resistance to his story. This story echoes what we are seeing today and we break down our feelings and views of these issues in depth. It isn’t the easiest listen. Reality can be harsh. So pour yourself a strong drink.
