Pete Herr of The Geekiverse joins Aaron and David  today to talk The Sounds of Thunder, Star Trek Discovery’s sixth episode of season two. Unfortunately Holly was abducted by the Red Angel this week she’ll have to tell us how that was once we get her back! Not much going this week in news except for the sad news of Star Trek actor Morgan Woodward passing away at the age of 93. This week the crew of the Discovery heads to Kamanar after a Red Angel sighting. The Ba’ul the predator race on Kamanar don’t like to talk to outsiders but Saru and his sister get an intimate meeting with one of the Ba’ul. After this meeting Saru gives us our best look at the Red Angel yet! Who could it be? Pour yourself a glass of Ba’ul Kamanar famous Kelpian Whiskey it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Before we get started on talking about the latest Star Trek Discovery episode we respond to the news that a Star Trek Animated Series is being developed for children on Nickelodeon. We also recall how some of us couldn’t watch certain shows on Nickelodeon or were prohibited from watching the channel at all! This week we still don’t get any Spock but we do get Section 31 and Admiral Cornwell makes her first appearance in season two this week. Phillip Malerich joins Holly, Aaron, and David to discuss Star Trek Discovery episode three, Point of Light. Before we get into full spoilers for Point of Light we discuss the Anson Mount Tweet about he and Ethan Peck are looking for work. We mention our theory that Discovery will have revolving captains each season. Even if that isn’t the case. Discovery is between seasons and the actors could use some work between seasons. It’s our 200th episode and we go long this week’s episode with Ash/Voq, the klingons, Georgiou and Section 31 all making a comeback this week. We hope this week isn’t a one off and that it really is setting up the remainder of the season. Discovery season two continues to delight with call back to Star Trek 6 and to The Next Generation. On the last week before Discovery season two starts we thought we’d cover Interstellar one of our favorite modern sci-fi films. Before we get into Interstellar we do have some Star Trek news.

Star Trek 4 seems to be on hold for an indeterminate amount of time with the director now signed to work on the Game of Thrones prequel show. We also got news that more Short Treks are expected to be coming and some details on the Picard show.

Beware if you have not seen Interstellar we do go full spoiler on the movie. Though if you have listened to us for any amount of time you know we go full spoilers when discussing movies. We really enjoy Interstellar for its use of black holes and time dilation to tell an engaging story. We hope you enjoy your weekly shot of Science Fiction and Michael Caine impersonations!

Episode 194: Spotting Dax III – Rules of Acquisition

It’s time for another episode of Spotting Dax! This week Aaron, Holly and David talk about the Star Trek Deep Space Nine season two episode Rules of Acquisition. Now we do hear you saying well isn’t this a Ferengi heavy episode?

You would be correct this is a Ferengi episode but, Dax is a way more interesting character and shows more character development in this episode as a side character then she did for her last two episodes. Just minutes into watching Rules of Acquisition we knew this was going to be a heavy episode. The episode opens with Dax playing Tango with a group of Ferengi and they discus Ferengi culture and the way women are treated in their culture. So once we finish the recap we have quite the discussion.

It’s been a while since we have discussed a Voyager episode so this week Holly, Aaron, and David talk the Star Trek Voyager episode Jetrel. But first we have some news. Aaron discovered on his YouTube feed that he started seeing new videos from the Axanar channel so it seems like that is back in production. This week the third Short Trek the Brightest Star was released and Holly and Aaron caught up on the paste episodes so we discuss our thoughts on Calypso and The Brightest Star.

Jetrel is a Voyager season one episode that centers on Neelix of all people. But this is actually a very solid episode with strong calls to World War II and Robert Oppenheimer. Jetrel is basically Oppenheimer and he developed a weapon of mass destruction that was used on the Talaxians. The episode is ultimately a message about forgiveness and Is really quite well done. Realm of Fear is one of the Next Generation Episodes that features Dwight Schultz as Barclay! Barclay is one of our favorite recurring characters in Star Trek, so it’s about time we do an episode that is all about him.

In this episode we learn Barclay has an extreme and possibly irrational fear of being transported. Barclay must overcome his fears to help solve the mystery about what happened to the USS Yosemite. Because this episode focuses on his fear that seems to be on the irrational side we get into a discussion on what some of our irrational fears are!
