Episode 173: Dear Doctor

After our fun filled episode last week it’s time to get serious, Aaron and David are back to discuss the Star Trek Enterprise episode “Dear Doctor”. “Dear Doctor” is a Phlox centered episode where he is asked to create a cure for the Valakians, a race dying of a genetic disease. The Valakians cohabits their planet peacefully with another humanoid race called the Menk.

Phlox ends up believing the Menk should be given a chance to thrive and with cure in hand he convinces Archer to not hand over the cure to the Valakians. After the recap of the episode Aaron and David debate whether or not Phlox and Archer committed genocide on the Valakians by as Kirk would say “Let them die!” We also have a listener email this week. What happens when transporter accidents don’t kill you? Aaron and David are here to recount the ballad of Thomas Riker. Some fates are worse than death, like being stuck alone for 8 years to find out that you actually did make it out. You could also be pining for a woman for 8 years just to find out she only wants to be friends. Or you could steal the most advanced federation warship and then turn yourself over to the Cardassians to work the rest of your days in a labor camp. You could also be promised a daring rescue by a woman who forgets about you when she falls in love with a changeling. The Ballad of Thomas Riker is one paved with much sorrow and regret!

But before we jump into Star Trek The Next Generation episode “Second Chances” and the DS9 episode “Defiant” we have some more exciting star trek news to talk about! Aaron and David discuss the Star Trek animated series episode “The Practical Joker”. This week we also received two new emails and we read and answer both after the recap and discussion of “The Practical Joker.” But before we get to “The Practical Joker” we discuss the Star Trek Discovery news that the showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts have been fired by CBS and are now longer working on Star Trek Discovery. Alex Kurtzman will be taking over as showrunner so Aaron and I also discuss our thoughts on that as well.

Did you ever think the USS Enterprise could or would have a sense of humor? It’s not something I have ever thought about but apparently some people did back in the 70s and this is how we got The Practical Joker! Larry Nemecek “Dr. Trek” returns to talk some Star Trek with Aaron and David. About five weeks ago Larry started his new Star Trek Podcast the Trek Files and he gives us the low down on his new show. We discuss the current state of Star Trek and we get Larry’s take on the current hot topic Star Trek Discovery.

Larry worked on Star Trek Continues and we ask him about the two part finale and his involvement towards the end of Star Trek Continues. Before we let Larry go David asks for an update on the Con of Wrath Documentary. We had a fantastic time having Larry on the show and we hope you enjoy your weekly shot of Star Trek!

We all have had a week to digest and ponder the whole first season of Star Trek Discovery and have come together to discuss our thoughts and feelings on the show.

As this episode is roundtable style its a bit more laid back and more conversational. It was great discussing the Discovery as a whole with Trekyards. We also take turns at the end discussing what we would each do if we had the keys to Star Trek Discovery for season two. The future of the show is so very exciting there are so many places the show can go. We can’t wait to see what Star Trek Discovery has instore for the future! O’Brien has just returned from an away mission and everyone around his is acting strange. O’Brien believes something has taken over the crew of the station while he was away and he is trying to escape before he falls victim to whatever it is that has happened. But things are not as they seem! Once we recap the episode go into our thoughts on the episode and how this was a kind of missed opportunity to follow up conspiracy.
