Episode 197: Interstellar

Episode 197: Interstellar

On the last week before Discovery season two starts we thought we’d cover Interstellar one of our favorite modern sci-fi films. Before we get into Interstellar we do have some Star Trek news.

Star Trek 4 seems to be on hold for an indeterminate amount of time with the director now signed to work on the Game of Thrones prequel show. We also got news that more Short Treks are expected to be coming and some details on the Picard show.

Beware if you have not seen Interstellar we do go full spoiler on the movie. Though if you have listened to us for any amount of time you know we go full spoilers when discussing movies. We really enjoy Interstellar for its use of black holes and time dilation to tell an engaging story. We hope you enjoy your weekly shot of Science Fiction and Michael Caine impersonations!

Episode 194: Spotting Dax III – Rules of Acquisition

It’s time for another episode of Spotting Dax! This week Aaron, Holly and David talk about the Star Trek Deep Space Nine season two episode Rules of Acquisition. Now we do hear you saying well isn’t this a Ferengi heavy episode?

You would be correct this is a Ferengi episode but, Dax is a way more interesting character and shows more character development in this episode as a side character then she did for her last two episodes. Just minutes into watching Rules of Acquisition we knew this was going to be a heavy episode. The episode opens with Dax playing Tango with a group of Ferengi and they discus Ferengi culture and the way women are treated in their culture. So once we finish the recap we have quite the discussion.

Pour yourself a glass of tulaberry wine it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 193: Jetrel

Episode 193: Jetrel

Episode 193: Jetrel

It’s been a while since we have discussed a Voyager episode so this week Holly, Aaron, and David talk the Star Trek Voyager episode Jetrel. But first we have some news. Aaron discovered on his YouTube feed that he started seeing new videos from the Axanar channel so it seems like that is back in production. This week the third Short Trek the Brightest Star was released and Holly and Aaron caught up on the paste episodes so we discuss our thoughts on Calypso and The Brightest Star.

Jetrel is a Voyager season one episode that centers on Neelix of all people. But this is actually a very solid episode with strong calls to World War II and Robert Oppenheimer. Jetrel is basically Oppenheimer and he developed a weapon of mass destruction that was used on the Talaxians. The episode is ultimately a message about forgiveness and Is really quite well done. Pour yourself a very strong drink, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Arron, Holly, and David are back this week to talk the TNG Episode Realm of Fear! No Star Trek news this week but the next Short Trek will be out before we record next week so we should of that to talk about next week. Realm of Fear is one of the Next Generation Episodes that features Dwight Schultz as Barclay! Barclay is one of our favorite recurring characters in Star Trek, so it’s about time we do an episode that is all about him.

In this episode we learn Barclay has an extreme and possibly irrational fear of being transported. Barclay must overcome his fears to help solve the mystery about what happened to the USS Yosemite. Because this episode focuses on his fear that seems to be on the irrational side we get into a discussion on what some of our irrational fears are! Pour yourself a drink that will help calm your nerves it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 182: Ender’s Game

Episode 182: Ender's Game

Episode 182: Ender’s Game

Michael Vine joins Aaron O’Brian and Holly Michelle Vine to discuss the Sci-fi film and novel Ender’s Game! David was at RocCon so Aaron takes the reigns this week. Ender’s Game is the first book in a sci-fi series from the 80’s that was made into movie in 2013. Aaron and Holly break down the movie and discuss the similarities and differences between the book and the film adaptation. Michael chimes in to give his takes on the military aspects of the film. Aaron also brings to light some of the controversy author Orson Scott Card got caught up in that probably ended up making the movie not as successful as it could of been. Episode 181: In a Mirror, Darkly

Episode 181: In a Mirror, Darkly

Episode 181: In a Mirror, Darkly

Last week Holly had some burning questions about the Tholians, so Aaron and David join Holly and  we take a look at the next time we see the Tholians “In a Mirror, Darkly”! Before we get into the episode Aaron has some news from the Star Trek Discovery cast fresh out of Fan Expo. “In a Mirror, Darkly” is a two part episode in Star Trek Enterprise’s fourth season. In this two parter we find out what happens with the Defiant after it was lost in interphasic space.

Oddly enough it ends up in the mirror universe 100 years in the past. After seeing Star Trek Discovery we all kind of scratch our heads at some of the actions that happen between the characters in this two parter. It seems at this time in the mirror universe everyone’s a little less murdery. Because there are multiple times in these episodes where character fight but they just let the loser live once they are beaten. But all in all we enjoyed “In a Mirror, Darkly”. Pour yourself a Gorn drink it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 177: Be Right Back

Episode 177: Be Right Back

Episode 177: Be Right Back

Holly Michelle is back this week to talk with Aaron and David about the Black Mirror Episode Be Right Back. Now don’t turn to a different podcast just yet! We very specifically picked this episode because if you listened to last week’s episode this episode fits in thematically to the discussion we had last week!

Be Right Back deals with grief and what that does to a person. It also confronts what if our personalities were put into a robot and will that be enough? After the episode recap we talk more about if we would want to live on after death so maybe our families will remember us and what the future may looks like to our descendants. We hope you held on tightly do your drink as we made that hard left turn into Black Mirror! At the top of the show we discuss the news of Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard.
