David is still recuperating from his frolicking on Pandora, so this week it’s just Aaron and Holly trying to wrap their heads around the Trolly Dilemma… sort of. Tuvix is a Voyager episode where Tuvok and Neelix are morphed into one being due to a breed of orchid being present in the transporter beam while the two are beaming back to the ship. There is much to chuckle about throughout this episode, even if it essentially ends in murder -”Give and Take” am I right? So grab a drink or just kick up your feet, and appreciate the fact that you have better friends than Tuvix has. Well… had. #JusticeForTuvix

Aaron is back this week with Holly and David to discuss both parts of The Menagerie the Star Trek Original series two part episode. With Captain Pike being all the rage after Star Trek Discovery’s second season we thought we would go back to where Spock decides to take after his sister and stage a mutiny. Spock does this to help his former captain live a better life since his unfortunate radiation bath he had on a Crossfield class starship filled with clueless cadets. We discuss our thoughts on this classic two part episode as well as how we feel about it now within the larger context of discovery and knowing the character of captain pike so much better then we did before. Pour yourself a big stiff drink things are about to get silly on your weekly shot of Star Trek.

Beware this episode contains full spoilers for Saints of Imperfection. Before we get started on talking about the latest Star Trek Discovery episode we respond to the news that a Star Trek Animated Series is being developed for children on Nickelodeon. We also recall how some of us couldn’t watch certain shows on Nickelodeon or were prohibited from watching the channel at all! This week we still don’t get any Spock but we do get Section 31 and Admiral Cornwell makes her first appearance in season two this week. New Eden was a fun episode and it’s probably the most Star Trek like Star Trek Discovery has ever felt and this is a great thing. On the last week before Discovery season two starts we thought we’d cover Interstellar one of our favorite modern sci-fi films. Before we get into Interstellar we do have some Star Trek news.

Star Trek 4 seems to be on hold for an indeterminate amount of time with the director now signed to work on the Game of Thrones prequel show. We also got news that more Short Treks are expected to be coming and some details on the Picard show.

Beware if you have not seen Interstellar we do go full spoiler on the movie. Though if you have listened to us for any amount of time you know we go full spoilers when discussing movies. We really enjoy Interstellar for its use of black holes and time dilation to tell an engaging story. We hope you enjoy your weekly shot of Science Fiction and Michael Caine impersonations!

Episode 194: Spotting Dax III – Rules of Acquisition

It’s time for another episode of Spotting Dax! This week Aaron, Holly and David talk about the Star Trek Deep Space Nine season two episode Rules of Acquisition. Now we do hear you saying well isn’t this a Ferengi heavy episode?

You would be correct this is a Ferengi episode but, Dax is a way more interesting character and shows more character development in this episode as a side character then she did for her last two episodes. Just minutes into watching Rules of Acquisition we knew this was going to be a heavy episode. The episode opens with Dax playing Tango with a group of Ferengi and they discus Ferengi culture and the way women are treated in their culture. So once we finish the recap we have quite the discussion.

It’s been a while since we have discussed a Voyager episode so this week Holly, Aaron, and David talk the Star Trek Voyager episode Jetrel. But first we have some news. Aaron discovered on his YouTube feed that he started seeing new videos from the Axanar channel so it seems like that is back in production. This week the third Short Trek the Brightest Star was released and Holly and Aaron caught up on the paste episodes so we discuss our thoughts on Calypso and The Brightest Star.

Jetrel is a Voyager season one episode that centers on Neelix of all people. But this is actually a very solid episode with strong calls to World War II and Robert Oppenheimer. Jetrel is basically Oppenheimer and he developed a weapon of mass destruction that was used on the Talaxians. The episode is ultimately a message about forgiveness and Is really quite well done. Pour yourself a very strong drink, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Realm of Fear is one of the Next Generation Episodes that features Dwight Schultz as Barclay! Barclay is one of our favorite recurring characters in Star Trek, so it’s about time we do an episode that is all about him.

In this episode we learn Barclay has an extreme and possibly irrational fear of being transported. Barclay must overcome his fears to help solve the mystery about what happened to the USS Yosemite. Because this episode focuses on his fear that seems to be on the irrational side we get into a discussion on what some of our irrational fears are! Ender’s Game is the first book in a sci-fi series from the 80’s that was made into movie in 2013. Aaron and Holly break down the movie and discuss the similarities and differences between the book and the film adaptation. Michael chimes in to give his takes on the military aspects of the film. Aaron also brings to light some of the controversy author Orson Scott Card got caught up in that probably ended up making the movie not as successful as it could of been.
