This week on Synthaholics David and Aaron discuss the Star Trek Voyager episode Real Life. Unfortunately Holly was not feeling well this week and unable to join us. But before we get into the voyager episode we talk a little Discovery news and about our expectations for season two.

We quickly discover that Real Life is one of Aaron least favorite episodes of Star Trek. While David doesn’t love the episode he is able to find more redeeming qualities in the episode. After the episode recap we get into talk about family life and how it was growing up for Aaron and I and how we compare to the doctors children. Episode 181: In a Mirror, Darkly

Last week Holly had some burning questions about the Tholians, so Aaron and David join Holly and we take a look at the next time we see the Tholians “In a Mirror, Darkly”! Before we get into the episode Aaron has some news from the Star Trek Discovery cast fresh out of Fan Expo. “In a Mirror, Darkly” is a two part episode in Star Trek Enterprise’s fourth season. In this two parter we find out what happens with the Defiant after it was lost in interphasic space.

Oddly enough it ends up in the mirror universe 100 years in the past. After seeing Star Trek Discovery we all kind of scratch our heads at some of the actions that happen between the characters in this two parter. It seems at this time in the mirror universe everyone’s a little less murdery. Because there are multiple times in these episodes where character fight but they just let the loser live once they are beaten. But all in all we enjoyed “In a Mirror, Darkly”. The Tholian Web has the unfortunate circumstances of being part of the third season of Star Trek. While neither a great episode or a terrible episode this episode has in a way had greatness thrust upon it. As The Tholian Web directly connects to the Enterprise Mirror Darkly two parter and the Star Trek Discovery mirror universe episodes. Love it or hate it The Tholian Web is a very important episode for Star Trek canon. Grab your liquefied Klingon nerve gas it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Aaron and David welcome Jeff Heller, of Film Dumpster, to the show to discuss the Star Trek TNG two parter Time’s Arrow. Before we get into the episode discussion Jeff talks to us about Film Dumpster and what they do there. San Diego Comic Con was this past week so we talk the trailers for Star Trek Discovery and The Orville season 2.

Jeff is a big fan of time travel so Time’s Arrow was a great episode to talk about. In this episode the crew of the enterprise go back in time to stop these soul sucking aliens and to find out why they found a 500 year old Data head. In this adventure they meet up with Ginun of the past, Jack London, and Mark Twain! Time to make yourself an Old Fashioned it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

What happens when transporter accidents don’t kill you? Aaron and David are here to recount the ballad of Thomas Riker. Some fates are worse than death, like being stuck alone for 8 years to find out that you actually did make it out. You could also be pining for a woman for 8 years just to find out she only wants to be friends. Or you could steal the most advanced federation warship and then turn yourself over to the Cardassians to work the rest of your days in a labor camp. You could also be promised a daring rescue by a woman who forgets about you when she falls in love with a changeling. The Ballad of Thomas Riker is one paved with much sorrow and regret!

But before we jump into Star Trek The Next Generation episode “Second Chances” and the DS9 episode “Defiant” we have some more exciting star trek news to talk about! This week we also received two new emails and we read and answer both after the recap and discussion of “The Practical Joker.” But before we get to “The Practical Joker” we discuss the Star Trek Discovery news that the showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts have been fired by CBS and are now longer working on Star Trek Discovery. Alex Kurtzman will be taking over as showrunner so Aaron and I also discuss our thoughts on that as well.

Did you ever think the USS Enterprise could or would have a sense of humor? It’s not something I have ever thought about but apparently some people did back in the 70s and this is how we got The Practical Joker! Episode 166: Nickel City Con 2018

Last week we mentioned we could be at Nickel City Con and we had a fantastic time at the con this past weekend. Aaron ran the Numina Comics table and David was a roamer when he wasn’t moderating panels with Barbara Eden, Frank Cho, and Lori Petty. We didn’t speak to as many guests and vendors this year as past years. David did run into Jeff who has been on past comic con episodes and our Balance of Terror episode.

David also got to talk to the Angry Video Game Nerd about some of his favorite Star Trek moments. To round out the episode Aaron and I recorded our first podcast panel at Nickel City Con. To round out the panel Robbie from The Nerdynomicon and Chris Chavez from the BICBP Radio Network join us. The panel is more about letting the people know about our shows and if they had and questions getting a podcast started. We hope you enjoy this special convention episode of Synthaholics!

HollyMIchelle has some very fascinating thoughts on Discovery as she went into the show with just about no info. She brings up many ideas that Aaron and I never really considered on our thoughts on Star Trek Discovery. Once we finish her takes the episodes shes asks us about our approach to talking about the show in the past.
