Synthaholics Episode 116: Star Trek DS9 The Jem’Hadar

This week we talk the Star Trek DS9 episode The Jem’Hadar. This is the season two finale for Deep Space Nine and and our first good look at two of the major players for the Dominion, the Jem’Hadar and the Vorta! But before we talk The Jem’Hadar we reflect on our weekend at Nickel City Con and talk a little bit more about our experience there as well.David wildly speculates about Voyager after mentioning the segment you all heard last week with Erin Gray. The Dominion the Vorta and the Jem’Hadar seem wildly overpowered and are scarier in this episode then they seem to be going forward. To wrap up we also talk bridge design pointing out the Enterprise and Odyssey have different bridges so it’s totally feasible for the USS Shenzhou’s bridge to look very different from the pike era Enterprise. Make sure you prep your jambalaya before you go camping, and don’t forget the alcohol! It’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

This week we were honored to get to talk with Nichelle Nichols, J.G. Hertzler, and Erin Gray at Nickel City Con! The Nickel City Con was such a blast this year, Aaron was at his table for Numina Comics and David was able to host a panel with Erin Gray. In addition to the celebrities, we were also able to speak with artists and con goers who were attending the convention to ask their thoughts about the Star Trek Discovery trailer that just aired last week. We got to hear from a variety of people ranging from non fans of Star Trek all the way up to people in full on Star Trek cosplay. We hope you enjoy this week’s comic con shot of Star Trek!

Voyager is the Light Bringer, Earth Shaker is this season six episode of Star Trek Voyager: Blink of an Eye. Aaron and David are sticking to their promise to bring you more voyager in 2017! This week we give Harry Kim a break since he barely appears in this episode! We enjoyed this episode about really bad science because it let us get to know the planet as it aged and the people that inhabited the planet and how its mythos was build all around the Light Bringer and Earth Shaker! It is interesting how myths and stories form a culture and we talk a little bit how things of old have their place in our culture. The Traveler appeared in three episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation over the seven seasons of the series. We briefly talk about the trek news before diving into the myth and lore behind the Traveler and his three fingers special! Ironically both Aaron and David didn’t remember the Traveler’s appearance in the episode Remember Me. The Traveler also appears in Where no one has gone before and Journey’s End. We speculate about Wesley’s origin and how it may tie into this character! We also talk about how creepy The Traveler seems to be. Are you thirsty? Episode 112: Giant cats and comics

When David is missing Aaron and Guy talk Giant cats and comics! This week Synthaholics goes into a deep dive on the Star Trek the animated series episode The Slaver Weapon. What would you put into a time capsule if you knew everything in it would be perfectly preserved? Lets hope it wouldn’t be a selfie, raw meat, and a swiss army gun. But if you did the Kzinti would probably appreciate it. This is one of two episodes where we ever see the Kzinti a bipedal cat like race who is bent on uncovering something to overthrow the federation. Once Aaron and Guy finish talking The Slaver weapon they get into a discussion about Guy’s Star Trek comic the USS Tamerlane. This leads to a segue to a Star Trek The Wrath of Khan and to Star Trek Nemesis! Anything and everything in this week’s episode of Synthaholics!

Aaron and David first talk some limited Trek news before delving into this week’s episode. Hard Time really gets the Synthaholics diving into a discussion on mental health, the justice system and the prison system. We still keep the humor coming but this is a bit on the deeper side of Synthaholics! After you get out of a 20 year jail sentence what is the first thing you get to drink? If you guest Synthale you are probably Irish! Personally I’d for for something harder but you choose whatever wets your whistle because it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 110: Star Trek The Disease

This week Aaron and David are alone to talk about Star Trek Voyager season 5 episode The Disease. We wanted to get into this episode because we referenced it the last time we spoke about Voyager in the Nightingale episode. Two is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do when you are Harry Kim and there is no reason you can’t be together in the story. He can’t be with his love because of silly 90’s television rules! This is a surprisingly strong episode of Voyager even though it is a Kim strong episode. We have fun discussing the episode and making up silly words for the parts of love! Aaron brings it with some great background info The Disease’s two main guest stars be sure to listen till the end to hear these. There are no borg in this episode but we did have a Borg Queen Martini to drink. You know the drill mix or pour yourself a drink because it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek.

Episode 109: Ghost in the Shell

Josiah LeRoy joins us to talk about the recent Ghost in the Shell film starring Scarlett Johansson. But before we get into that we talk some The Walking Dead spoilers and what that means for our Star Trek Discovery lead Sonequa Martin-Green. Aaron and David are huge fans of the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell anime and Josiah had gotten to see a portion of it before getting together to do this podcast. We go in depth about the differences and similarities between the original film and this live action adaptation. The discussion also delves into the philosophy of the original movie and how it’s changed for the new film. We all agree this movie delivers a visual feast for the eyes so if you have not seen this movie you should see it for the spectacle alone. This isn’t a perfect movie but we all agree it is worth seeing and worth seeing on the big screen! What do cyborgs like to drink? I don’t’ know but you should drink what you like because it’s time for your monthly shot of Non-Trek Science Fiction!
