Episode 225: Even More Picard

Episode 225: Even More Picard

Episode 225: Even More Picard

The Syntaholics continue on in their quest to discover what may have lead Picard to leave Starfleet. A look into “The Defector” and “Offspring” may have proven useful, as they show a captain who both carefully contemplates federation rules and regulations while also challenging authority if he deems it necessary, and of course more Data. This week, continue the trek with Aaron and Holly, and for a more detailed discussion on The Offspring, look to Episode 119 of the Synthaholics Podcast featuring Michele Specht of Star Trek Continues.

Episode 224: Pondering Picard… A TWOFER!

Episode 224: Pondering Picard... A TWOFER!

Episode 224: Pondering Picard… A TWOFER!

The mission this week is to discuss two episodes from TNG that have already been discussed in the past, because we believe they may ready us for what is to come. “The Measure of a Man” and “Who Watches the Watchers” are episodes that deal with Picards moral standings, his integrity, his dedication to his crew, and shows that he is willing to go toe-to-toe with the Federation if he feels it necessary. This is the third episode in a series of investigations into Picard, in hopes of getting us inside Jean-Luc’s head before the much anticipated series airs in 2020…

For deeper discussions on these two episodes, enjoy Episode 143: The Measure of a Man with Kipleigh Brown, and Episode 174: Who Watches the Watchers with Robbie Palmer.

Episode 223: The Battle

Episode 223: The Battle

Episode 223:  The Battle

Picard… The final frontier…

These are the Voyages of the Starship Synthahol.
The second adventure in their new Mission:

To explore the inner psyche of one Jean-Luc Picard…
To look to the past; To predict the future…

To inappropriately go where no one has gone before…

Hah! Sorry, it had to be done. This week the gang discusses another Picard episode in hopes to re familiarize themselves with Jean-Luc before the premiere of Star Trek: Picard! “Battle” shows us a time in Picards career where he had to abandon ship, and now he is reliving the event but he may not be coping well with it. Stand-by, and enjoy this week’s episode paired with a niiiiiiice parfait…

Episode 222: Where Silence Has Lease

Episode 222: Where Silence Has Lease

Episode 222: Where Silence has Lease

This week Aaron and Holly chase their tails, much like Captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise in Where Silence takes Lease. This episode has us thinking about the observation, treatment, and judgment of others- and a lot of side chat that hopefully we managed to tack onto the end of this episode.

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Episode 192: Realm of Fear

Arron, Holly, and David are back this week to talk the TNG Episode Realm of Fear! No Star Trek news this week but the next Short Trek will be out before we record next week so we should of that to talk about next week. Realm of Fear is one of the Next Generation Episodes that features Dwight Schultz as Barclay! Barclay is one of our favorite recurring characters in Star Trek, so it’s about time we do an episode that is all about him.

In this episode we learn Barclay has an extreme and possibly irrational fear of being transported. Barclay must overcome his fears to help solve the mystery about what happened to the USS Yosemite. Because this episode focuses on his fear that seems to be on the irrational side we get into a discussion on what some of our irrational fears are! Pour yourself a drink that will help calm your nerves it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 184: I Borg

Episode 184: I Borg

Episode 184: I Borg

The three Synthaholics are back on their regular schedule and no audio issues! This week they discuss I Borg from the 5th season of Star Trek The Next Generation. Before we get into the episode discussion we have some Star Trek Discovery news. At NYCC the second trailer for Star Trek Discovery dropped and we were all pretty blown away by it. Robbie from The Nerdynomicon Podcast joins us to discuss the trailer before beaming out. The first Short Trek Runaway is out and we got full spoilers on it. I Borg is a fantastic episode involving the borg and deals with the moral questions of how we may view our enemies. Check out the Synthaholics YouTube channel to learn how to make a Borg Queen Martini so you can drink along with your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Before we get into the episode discussion Jeff talks to us about Film Dumpster and what they do there. San Diego Comic Con was this past week so we talk the trailers for Star Trek Discovery and The Orville season 2.

Jeff is a big fan of time travel so Time’s Arrow was a great episode to talk about. In this episode the crew of the enterprise go back in time to stop these soul sucking aliens and to find out why they found a 500 year old Data head. In this adventure they meet up with Ginun of the past, Jack London, and Mark Twain! Time to make yourself an Old Fashioned it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 168: Dixon Hill

Episode 168: Dixon Hill

Episode 168: Dixon Hill

This week Aaron and David discuss the comings and goings of Picard’s favorite Holodeck character Dixon Hill! We were surprised to only find four times where Picard steps into the role of Dixon Hill. The first and most substantial appearance of the character was in The Next Generation season one episode “The Big Goodbye”. Dixon Hill also shows up in the season two episode “Manhunt” the season four episode “Clues” and probably makes the most memorable appearance in the film Star Trek First Contact.

Dixon Hill is a fun character to see Picard play and he is so memorable we could of swore he came up in TNG more often. Be sure to put your drinks on Dixon’s tab at Rex’s Bar, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek.

Synthaholics Episode 127: The Ballad of Harry Mudd

Episode 127: The Ballad of Harry Mudd

Synthaholics Episode 127: The Ballad of Harry Mudd

This week we discuss the Ballad of Harry Mudd. Harcourt Fenton Mudd appeared three times in Star Trek’s past and will be appearing in the upcoming Star Trek Discovery. So in preparation we are talking about the Star Trek The Original Series episodes Mudd’s Women and I, Mudd as well as the Star Trek Animated Series episode Mudd’s Passion.

Before we get started we talk about the unfortunate news of LeVar Burton being sued over a catch phrase. After the news we quickly give the synopsis for each of the three episodes then get deep into our Mudd discussion. Harry is a really fun character even if his episodes weren’t the greatest.

We are excited to see how Rainn Wilson’s take on Mudd will be in Discovery and we are very much hoping his personality will be intact. It’s that time of the week again break out the liquors and make your favorite drinks because it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!

Episode 126: Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV

Episode 126: Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV

This week we talk Cause and Effect with Joe DePinto live from STLV. STLV is the Star Trek Las Vegas convention it is the largest Star Trek Con in the United States. Since Joe was still at the convention when we recorded this week he tells us what he has been up to at the con.

The stories from the con are great and one of Joe’s favorite episodes is the Star Trek The Next Generation episode Cause and Effect. This is a very fun episode that uses time travel in a new way for its time. If you think this is a copy of Groundhog Day this episode actually came out first!

Once we break down the episode we get into a discussion about our experiences with Déjà vu. The talk of Déjà vu makes David think of his fascination with the mandela effect. We go over a few examples of this effect and what the theory of how so many people can have false memories. Grab your favorite drink and your cards it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!
