The Syntaholics continue on in their quest to discover what may have lead Picard to leave Starfleet. A look into “The Defector” and “Offspring” may have proven useful, as they show a captain who both carefully contemplates federation rules and regulations while also challenging authority if he deems it necessary, and of course more Data. This week, continue the trek with Aaron and Holly, and for a more detailed discussion on The Offspring, look to Episode 119 of the Synthaholics Podcast featuring Michele Specht of Star Trek Continues.
The mission this week is to discuss two episodes from TNG that have already been discussed in the past, because we believe they may ready us for what is to come. “The Measure of a Man” and “Who Watches the Watchers” are episodes that deal with Picards moral standings, his integrity, his dedication to his crew, and shows that he is willing to go toe-to-toe with the Federation if he feels it necessary. This is the third episode in a series of investigations into Picard, in hopes of getting us inside Jean-Luc’s head before the much anticipated series airs in 2020…
For deeper discussions on these two episodes, enjoy Episode 143: The Measure of a Man with Kipleigh Brown, and Episode 174: Who Watches the Watchers with Robbie Palmer.
These are the Voyages of the Starship Synthahol. The second adventure in their new Mission:
To explore the inner psyche of one Jean-Luc Picard… To look to the past; To predict the future…
To inappropriately go where no one has gone before…
Hah! Sorry, it had to be done. This week the gang discusses another Picard episode in hopes to re familiarize themselves with Jean-Luc before the premiere of Star Trek: Picard! “Battle” shows us a time in Picards career where he had to abandon ship, and now he is reliving the event but he may not be coping well with it. Stand-by, and enjoy this week’s episode paired with a niiiiiiice parfait…
This week Aaron and Holly chase their tails, much like Captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise in Where Silence takes Lease. This episode has us thinking about the observation, treatment, and judgment of others- and a lot of side chat that hopefully we managed to tack onto the end of this episode.
Aaron and David welcome Jeff Heller, of Film Dumpster, to the show to discuss the Star Trek TNG two parter Time’s Arrow. Before we get into the episode discussion Jeff talks to us about Film Dumpster and what they do there. San Diego Comic Con was this past week so we talk the trailers for Star Trek Discovery and The Orville season 2.
Jeff is a big fan of time travel so Time’s Arrow was a great episode to talk about. In this episode the crew of the enterprise go back in time to stop these soul sucking aliens and to find out why they found a 500 year old Data head. In this adventure they meet up with Ginun of the past, Jack London, and Mark Twain! Time to make yourself an Old Fashioned it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!
David Duncan is off this week! So Aaron has the keys to the podcast. Will Aaron crash podcast into a ravine? In this thrilling ride Aaron is joined this episode with Robbie Palmer from the Nerdynomicon. Together they discuss Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Who Watches the Watchers?”. Robbie & Aaron talk about their love for Twin Peaks and the actor Ray Wise. As they deconstruct this episode the topics of the Prime Directive, Ray Wise and Religion are discussed. What happens when transporter accidents don’t kill you? Aaron and David are here to recount the ballad of Thomas Riker. Some fates are worse than death, like being stuck alone for 8 years to find out that you actually did make it out. You could also be pining for a woman for 8 years just to find out she only wants to be friends. Or you could steal the most advanced federation warship and then turn yourself over to the Cardassians to work the rest of your days in a labor camp. You could also be promised a daring rescue by a woman who forgets about you when she falls in love with a changeling. The Ballad of Thomas Riker is one paved with much sorrow and regret!
But before we jump into Star Trek The Next Generation episode “Second Chances” and the DS9 episode “Defiant” we have some more exciting star trek news to talk about! You may wipe the sweat from your brow no animated series episode today! Pour yourself a double of whatever you are drinking, it’s time for your weekly shot of Star Trek!
Are you ready for more prime directive? Well we hope the answer is yes because we are moving The Prime Directive discussion into the TNG era this week! This week we get into classic episodes such as “Justice”, “Pen Pals”, “Who Watches the Watchers”, “First Contact”, “Homeward”, and many others! For the most part we thought TNG would be much clearer examples of break or not break in The Prime Directive. But there were a few we definitely got into some debate over whether or not the prime directive was broken or not. We have been having so much fun going over the ins and outs of The Prime Directive, we hope you are enjoying as much as we are.
