Episode 283: Lower Decks Much Ado About Boimler

Aaron and David are back this week to talk the next episode of Lower Decks “Much Ado About Boimler”. But before we get into this week’s episode we ponder the latest Star Trek Discovery Season 3 trailer. The trailer has spawned some fan theories and we also discuss our thoughts on them. This episode gives us our first mention of Division 14, a medical branch in Starfleet that handles unsolvable diseases and science mysteries. This is an idea we both really love. David was very disappointed “Moist Vessel” didn’t quite turn out how he expected it to be given the title. However the episode does help us dive into a deep discussion about what happens on the holodeck and what becomes of all the waste left in holodeck. This week David and Aaron are on their own to discuss Temporal Edict the third episode of the outstanding new animated Star Trek show Lower Decks. The episode title is a bit of a misnomer as we were expecting a time travel episode. However Temporal Edict dealt with Scotty’s invention of buffer time and the micromanaging of a Star Fleet crew and the repercussions it can have on people’s morale and their productivity. Lower Decks for the most part is a very strong trek show and we still consider the best Star Trek show CBS All Access has produced. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store. Star Trek Lower Decks the latest CBS All Access Star Trek Show and the Synthaholics are here to cover it. The first episode of Lower Decks is titled “Second Contact”. The U.S.S. Cerritos is making second contact and is setting up its communication array so that they can communicate with the rest of the federation. This episode introduces us to our lower decks crew, Brad Boimler, D’Vana Tendi, Beckett Mariner, and Sam Rutherford. Aaron and I were delighted by this first entry into this brand new Star Trek show and we can’t wait to see what future episodes of Lower Decks will bring us.

As our country struggles with the issues of race and equality we dive into a classic Deep Space Nine episode. In this story the Prophets transport Sisko to the 1950s. Sisko becomes Benny Russell, a science-fiction writer that struggles with civil rights and inequality. When Benny writes his best story of Captain Benjamin Sisko a black commander of a futuristic space station. Benny is met with resistance to his story. This story echoes what we are seeing today and we break down our feelings and views of these issues in depth. It isn’t the easiest listen. Reality can be harsh. So pour yourself a strong drink. This week we need to apologize to our special guest Jason Yungbluth. Because was are talking about one of our least favorite episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise – “Extinction”. BUT there is more! We balance off this bitter episode with the sweet discussion of Jason Yungbluth’s newset comic book “Kobayashi Maru”! A comic book series set in a universe that parodies the Star Trek universe. Yungbluth is well known for his work comic book writer & artist on “Weapon Brown” (a dystopic Charlie Brown story) and “Deep Fried” (a untouchable comedy comic strip). Poor Jason has to talk about this shitty episode, but at least it is good for a few laughs. Enjoy together responsibly!
